A LIMERICK event to mark the global 16 Days of Action Opposing Violence Against Women is organised for Thursday December 5, by the local branch of Women’s Collective Ireland.
Organisers say the event will be an evening of building solidarity and community among women in Limerick, where space will be created for women to connect through their shared struggles and commonalities, and issues surrounding global violence against women will be addressed.
Guest speakers include Nelofer Pazira-Fisk an Irish based Afghan-Canadian filmmaker, journalist, author, and human rights activist and Zoë Lawlor, chairperson of the Ireland Palestine Solidarity campaign.
The Limerick branch of the Muslim Sisters of Éire will also be speaking about their work, which includes soup runs and supporting the homeless. The event will also have poetry and community singing.
Yvie Murphy, Limerick coordinator for Women’s Collective Ireland said that “women across the globe face violence, discrimination, and harm, we see this every day. What we are hoping to do with this event is to bring women together, in our sadness and in our joy, in our struggles and in our power.”
“We want to remember the women we have lost to men’s violence and war and explore ways we can work together to improve the lives of women everywhere.”
Zoë Lawlor of the Ireland Palestine Solidarity campaign said, “in over a year of genocide where 70 oer cent of the thousands killed in Gaza are women and children, it is clear that Israel is committing the gravest of crimes against them. We must stand with our Palestinian sisters and do what we can to end this gross injustice.”
The Women’s Solidarity event takes place on December 5 from 5.30pm to 7.30pm in Ormston House.
The event is free but places are limited and must be booked in advance on 087 328 3746 or [email protected].
