A DEVICE developed by the Milford Care Centre to make life easier for people in care who find it difficult to use standard call bells and buttons has won a prestigious award.

The Care Companion, a call bell system developed by Milford Care Centre, was honoured with the Best Use of Innovative Technology Award at the Bright Spark National Innovation Awards 2024.

The judges lauded the Care Companion’s impact on enhancing patient independence and safety within care environments.

The device features a wide surface paddle that detects minimal contact, making it easier for patients with complex neurological conditions to call for assistance.

The system’s adaptability through a plug-and-play kit allows for customisation to various care settings, improving its usability and effectiveness.

The Care Companion has been implemented in over 50 care facilities, improving patient safety and response times. More than one third of patients said it is better than the traditional call bell system.

The project has been recognised for its role in enhancing the quality of care for patients with complex needs.

Jackie Bryan from Milford Care Centre said the device “has significantly improved the way patients with complex conditions request help, enhancing their safety and independence. Receiving this award acknowledges the innovative nature of our system and its positive impact on patient care.”

Jared Gormly, HSE Spark Programme Director, added that “the Care Companion exemplifies how technology can address specific patient needs and enhance care quality. This award highlights its effectiveness in improving patient independence and safety through innovative design.”
