FIANNA Fáil general election candidate for County Limerick, Cllr Bridie Collins, believes that the latest housing commencement figures show her party’s continued momentum on housing.
Commencements from January to October this year saw an 81 per cent increase on the same period in 2023, which Cllr Collins suggests is an indicator that Fianna Fáil is turning the dial on housing across the country.
“For so long we saw very little movement on this issue, but now we can see real progress thanks to Fianna Fáil. In the first 10 months of this year, we have seen 1,192 houses commenced compared to 657 in the same period in 2023,” the Adare-Rathkeale representative said.
Figures released by the Department of Housing show that there has been over 53,000 homes commenced across the country since January of this year — a 101 per cent increase.
Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil’s candidate in Limerick City, Dee Ryan, has said housing for hard working families is an urgent need.
“Housing is an issue that impacts everyone,” the former Limerick Chamber CEO said.
“I have total empathy for people in rental accommodation or their parents’ homes waiting to buy a house of their own.
“I spent seven years renting myself as a young adult with small children, wondering when I would secure a home and worrying that the next text message would be an eviction one from my landlord.”
She says that a regional focus is needed to further bring positive national momentum to Limerick, and that her party is dedicated to delivering more affordable housing on Shannonside.
