GARDAÍ in Limerick have issued a public appeal for information following a tragic death on one of the city’s busiest roads.

It was confirmed that a man in his 50s was killed in a hit and run incident that took place this Tuesday afternoon on the Ennis Road in Limerick City shortly before 2pm.

It is understood that the pedestrian was killed when he was struck by a maroon Ford Focus, after which, Gardaí said, the driver fled the scene.

The car has since been recovered, Gardaí said, and one man, aged in his 30s, was arrested in connection with the fatal hit and run and held at a Garda station in the Southern region.

In the wake of the incident, Gardaí have issued an appeal to the public for more information as to the movements of the maroon-coloured Ford Focus around the time of the tragic collision.

A Garda statement said that the car’s registration was 141 C 3717.

“Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Anyone with any information on the movements of the Ford Focus around the time of the incident is asked to contact Gardaí,” a Garda statement read.

“Any road users who were travelling in the area at the time of the collision and who may have camera footage (including dashcam) are asked to contact Gardaí.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Henry Street Garda Station on 061 212 400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”

The Ennis Road remains closed since the tragic incident, pending an examination of the scene by Garda forensic collision investigators.

Local diversions are in place, as long traffic delays have been experienced by commuters throughout the afternoon and into this evening.

Gardaí remain at the scene and investigations are ongoing.
