NA PIARSAIGH’S All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship medal winner from 2016 David Breen is on board with Liverpool as The Reds seek a 20th Premier League title.
In a move described by his former club as “definitely Liverpool’s signing of the season,” the 39-year-old has joined the setup at Anfield as the club’s first-team rehabilitation physiotherapist.
“We’re all immensely proud in Na Piarsaigh of Davy,” the local club posted on X.
Breen arrives at Arne Slot’s league leaders with a wonderfully diverse sporting portfolio.
He was recently involved with the Republic of Ireland men’s senior team, and also previously worked with Premiership Rugby side Harlequins, Munster Rugby, Manchester City’s academy, Wasps Rugby, and in the Leinster Rugby academy.
On the hurling front, he helped Na Piarsaigh to five county championships (including its breakthrough win of 2011), four provincial titles, and Limerick’s only national club success back in 2016.
During a notable six-year spell with Limerick, he featured in the Donal O’Grady (Granagh Ballingarry) captained Munster Championship winning team of 2013, one which caused a massive Final upset with a stunning 0-24 to 0-15 defeat of Cork at a heaving Gaelic Grounds.
Breen wore that number 10 jersey on that memorable occasion in a half-forward line that also included James Ryan of Garryspillane and Séamus Hickey, then of Murroe Boher and nowadays of Croagh Kilfinny.
Liverpool will aim to consolidate their pole position league standing with an anticipated victory over relegation-threatened Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium on Sunday (2pm).
On Wednesday next, the side host Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions Cup at a sold-out (60,000-plus) Anfield.
Breen’s younger brother Adrian, who was a member of Limerick’s Munster and All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship winning squad of 2020, remains very much a pivotal figure with Na Piarsaigh.
