GARDAÍ in Limerick seized over half a million euros in cocaine this past Friday (November 22) during two separate searches in Limerick City.

The major drug hauls were confirmed by a Garda spokesman who said that a combined €560,000 in suspected cocaine was seized “during searches at a number of locations in Limerick City” in an operation carried out under a nationwide anti-drug campaign.

The first, and largest, seizure was made when Gardaí stopped and searched a vehicle in the city on Friday, with officers finding €490,000 worth of suspected cocaine.

According to the Garda spokesman, during a second – and unconnected – search of a property in Limerick City on Friday, Gardaí seized a further €70,000 of suspected cocaine.

The drugs were sent to Forensic Science Ireland for further analysis and confirmation.

A statement from An Garda Síochána confirmed that two men were arrested in connection with the drug seizures, a man in his 40s and a man in his 60s, who were detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996, in a Garda station in the Limerick area.

According to Gardaí, investigations into the massive cocaine haul are ongoing.

It is not currently known which man was arrested in connection with which seizure.

The raids were carried out under Operation Tara, an anti-drugs campaign focusing on dismantling drug trafficking gangs.

Operation Tara was established by Commissioner Drew Harris in July 2021 to tackle importation, distribution, cultivation, production, and the sale and supply of drugs at a local, national, and international level.
