New owners of former Debenhams site talk future plans with Limerick Council

The former Debenhams store in Limerick closed in April 2020.

THE new owners of the former Debenhams building on O’Connell Street in Limerick City are engaged with the Planning Department of Limerick City and County Council around their future plans for the building.

At this month’s meeting of the Metropolitan District of Limerick City and County Council, Sinn Féin councillor Ursula Gavan wanted to know if the local authority had been in contact with the new owners regarding it lying idle.

She also wanted to know about the owner’s future plans for the building and the taxes currently levied by the Council due to it remaining empty.

Director of Service Vincent Murray explained that the Planning Department has confirmed that this building does not currently meet the definition of a derelict site within the meaning contained in the Derelict Sites Act 1990, so is therefore not currently listed as a derelict property.

“Finance have confirmed that commercial rates charges continue to apply,” he added.
