MORE than 300,000 hampers of festive cheer have been delivered to households in need in the 50 years since the Redemptorists in Limerick began their Christmas appeal.
And the order said, launching the appeal earlier this month, that they expect to have to offer even more help this year as poverty in Limerick is on the rise.
The appeal has been running for more than 50 years, ensuring there is food on every table at Christmas.
Rector of the Redemptorists, Father Brian Nolan, is appealing to people to support the campaign as the cost of living is continuing to put pressure on families.
This year’s Redemptorists’ Christmas Hamper Appeal is largely asking for cash donations. The organisers of the appeal have already bought the food for the hampers and need the money reimbursed to be able to continue to offer supports to people throughout the year.
Each Christmas the Perpetual Help Fund provides 6,000 food hampers to families in need. Throughout the year, the people who run the fund support organisations working to alleviate food poverty and are founding members of the Limerick Food Partnership.
Each hamper contains 19 items and includes basic foodstuffs such as tea, coffee, and sugar, as well as festive items like chocolates, biscuits, and crisps.
The Perpetual Help Fund is an initiative of the Redemptorist Community based in Mount St Alphonsus. The primary work of the fund is the Redemptorist Christmas Hamper Appeal.
