AHANE annexed a rare County Football title with a thrilling 1-12 to 1-11 win over Camogue Rovers in the Woodlands House Hotel Junior Final in Doon.
Five-time winners of the senior c’ship way back in the 1930s, this victory was a first for the club in the code since the Junior success of 1962.
The victory was only secured courtesy of a point from impact substitute Gavin Rowesome deep into lost time.
Ahane’s starting selection was noteworthy for the inclusion of a plethora of sporting stars, such as a pair of former international rugby players – Seán Cronin (who previously won a Senior Football medal with Monaleen) and Ian Keatley – Clare legend Gary Brennan (0-4) and local hurling royalty Dan Morrissey, a four-time All-Star recipient, and county panellist Ciarán Barry.
David Laing, with a healthy contribution of three points, was chosen as man-of-the-match for a side managed by Paul Darmody and under the fine captaincy of full-back Mike O’Neill.
Meanwhile, Cappagh run up against Firies in the semi-final of the Munster Junior Championship at Austin Stack Park, Tralee on Saturday (1pm).
