FINE Gael councillor Olivia O’Sullivan has called on Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) to write to the Minister for Health in support of Dyslexia Ireland’s call for young people with dyslexia and other learning difficulties to be given extra time in state exams.
The accommodation of extra time, Cllr O’Sullivan said, is currently not available for dyslexic students in state exams, “putting them at a significant disadvantage”.
The City North representative took the view that the introduction of extra time would help “level the playing field”.
Seconding her motion, Cllr Daniel Butler (FG) deemed the move as a very simple measure that could have a very significant impact in what is a highly pressurised environment for young people.
