WEEKENDS are about to get more festive in Limerick City as two busy city streets are set to periodically close to cater for some fun and festive Christmas activities.
Limerick City and County Council announced this past week that both Nicholas Street and The Crescent on O’Connell Street will close intermittently across late November and December to make way for festive feats and celebrations.
Nicholas Street will close for periods across two Fridays and three Saturdays in the coming weeks to cater for Christmas activities.
The street, which has been bustling with activity in recent months and has in recent years become home to the annual Christmas fair at the Treaty City Brewery, will close on Saturday November 30, December 7, and December 14 from 1pm to 9pm.
On Friday December 6 and December 13, Nicholas Street will close from 2pm to 10pm.
Traffic will be diverted via Convent Street, Castle Street, Island Road, and Athlunkard Street.
The Crescent on O’Connell Street will be closed on three Sundays throughout December – December 8, 15, and 22 – from 12pm to 6pm, also to make way for a range of Christmas activities which have yet to be announced.
The street was previously closed by the Council and Mayor John Moran across August and hosted a number of well-attended events including live music and opera, a community dinner, and various other cultural performances, as well as the much talked about pop-up beach.
Diversions will be in place via Newenham Street, Henry Street, Lower Hartstonge Street, Barrington Street, Pery Square, and Mallow Street.
