TWO world champions in their fields and a global business leader were honoured at a ceremony at the University of Limerick (UL).
Five-time world champion Irish dancer David Geaney, reigning world and European champion in the 3K open-water swim in the 70-74 age group Jane Jolly, and Executive Vice President of Global Operations at Dexcom Barry Regan were all honoured at the 2024 UL Alumni Awards.
The 17th annual UL Alumni Awards took place in Castletroy, with the three awardees joining a select group of just 53 UL graduates to have been honoured since the awards began in 2006.
The Alumni Awards programme was designed to recognise graduates who have made an outstanding contribution in particular fields.
Irish dancer David Greaney, who graduated in 2017 with a BSc Economics and Mathematical Sciences, in was awarded the outstanding achievement award in the arts and culture category, while Jane Jolly, who graduated with a BEd Physical Education in 1976 was awarded the outstanding achievement award in the world of sport.
Barry Reagan graduated in 1994 with a BTech in Electronic Production, and was honoured with an outstanding achievement award in the world of business.
Acting UL president Professor Shane Kilcommins said that the UL Alumni Awards are a chance to recognise the the achievements of past students of the university.
“This year’s award recipients exemplify the spirit of UL, demonstrating innovation, leadership, and a commitment to making the world a better place,” Prof Kilcommins said.
“Each year since we first gathered 18 years ago, we celebrate the significant contributions made by the award recipients in their respective fields, highlighting the diverse talents nurtured at UL. Their successes inspire our current students and remind us of the limitless potential that lies within our community, ” the acting president added.
The Awards recognise graduates who have made a significant impact in various fields, including in business, entrepreneurship, science and technology, academia, societal and humanitarian areas, sport, culture, and the arts.
