Works to begin on new Garda Station for Newcastle West

The previous station was described by the GRA as 'not fit for purpose'.

WORKS are about to begin on the long-awaited new Newcastle West Garda Station.

It is understood that construction on the new station, which will replace the previous station serving the area, will get underway in this month.

A contractor for the new three-storey, 1,200 square-metre building, on Churchtown Road in Newcastle West, was appointed in early September.

In June 2015, an engineer’s inspection found the former station was too small and infested with rats, with the GRA describing it at the time as “not fit for purpose”.

The station lay idle since 2020.
