Limerick councillor hits out at ‘bizarre’ Arthur’s Quay redevelopment proposals

Cllr Leddin said he wants the Council to go back to the drawing board on the Arthur's Quay plans.

LABOUR councillor Joe Leddin has expressed his disappointment at the proposed redevelopment options identified under the Arthur’s Quay Framework Project.

As the closing date for submissions passed this week, Cllr Leddin posited that the options put forward failed to adequately inform the people of Limerick and allow them to make informed submissions on the future of a core part of the city.

Speaking to the Limerick Post, the City West representative took the view that what was provided to the public just were two proposals as option one proposed a ‘do nothing’ approach.

“The framework plans fail to take account of the need to address the substantial deficit in city centre living so as to substantially increase footfall. The failure to inform on what, if any, cost benefit analysis has been undertaken by the Office of Public Works on the future use options for Sarsfield House is disappointing,” Cllr Leddin opined.

“The proposal to give additional public land to a private commercial entity without any idea on proposed designs or timeframes on a new shopping centre is bizarre. The failure of the University of Limerick to properly manage their building and provide any clarity on their future plans along with the lack of any information on the potential of the under-developed site to the rear of Penneys is concerning.”

Cllr Leddin said he has made a submission to express his concerns and will be requesting that the Council go back to the drawing board when additional information is provided together with estimated timeframes.

“In the absence of this important information, the process is flawed and prevents us to make informed decisions on the best possible options. What we all want is a revitalised public park with associated amenity and leisure facilities that strengthens our connection with the river and delivers a positive experience for visitors,” he concluded.
