A NARROW bridge in the county on the main road between Limerick and Waterford could be bypassed if proposed plans for the realignment of the N24 go ahead.

Limerick City and County Council, in conjunction with Tipperary County Council, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), and the Department of Transport published the second design update for the N24 Cahir to Limerick Junction Project this past Friday (October 25).

The plans would see the existing N24 realigned, with towns and villages like Tipperary Town, Oola, and Monard essentially being by-passed with the road running around each of these areas to take traffic out of town and village centres.

The narrow Brooks Bridge, between Oola and Pallasgreen, would also be bypassed as part of the plans, with the new road aiming to link back up with the existing N24 past this point.

As part of the overall project, active travel measures will be prioritised where possible, aiming to encourage walking, cycling, and wheeling to work, school, and leisure activities, as well as linking communities, promoting healthier lifestyles, and reducing transport emissions.

Welcoming the progress on the project, Mayor of Limerick John Moran said that the new design update is a step towards a more sustainable transport solution.

He said the “the project will have a positive impact both for the local communities but also for balanced regional development. It moves us closer now to a time when each of our four regional cities are connected with more acceptable road infrastructure.”
