History student awarded Gerald Griffin Award by Limerick Writer’s Centre

Cork student Freyja Hellebust won the Gerald Griffin Competition for her work.

CORK history student Freyja Hellebust was named the winner of the 2024 Gerald Griffin Competition for First Orginal Adult Fiction for her manuscript novel submission ‘Head First, From a Height’.

She was awarded Ireland’s newest literary prize by the Limerick Writer’s Centre at a ceremony at The People’s Museum of Limerick.

Judges lauded the “fullness” of Hellebust’s prose, citing comparisons to Edna O’Brien and James Joyce.

The Cork student previously won the short story competition at Listowel Writers’ Week as well as the UCC Eoin Murray scholarship for creative writing.

The Gerald Griffin Competition is named for the 19th century novelist and aims to discover and promote new voices in Irish literature.
