ANY dyed-in-the-wool Limerick hurling supporter will tell you that you never say anything good about “the old enemy” in the Banner County.
This left Social Democrats councillor Shane Hickey O’Mara in a bit of a pickle at this month’s Metropolitan District meeting as he put forward a motion praising the home of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Champions.
Pointing out that he comes from “a hurling obsessed family”, as way of eating some humble pie, Cllr Hickey O’Mara sang the accolades of the Banner County in its pursuits off the pitch.
“When it comes to publicly championing their local artists, Clare Arts Office’s online directory of local professional artists was recently highlighted to me by the members of the Art for Limerick collective,” he said.
The City North representative then proposed that Limerick Arts Office take a leaf out of its neighbour’s book and establish an online directory of Limerick-based artists.
“This motion takes inspiration from Clare Arts Office’s online directory, which platforms artists from all artistic disciplines, providing a useful way to stay in touch with local artists, to build awareness of their work, and to link in with them for future projects,” he explained.
“Limerick isn’t able to match them in terms of hurling this year, unfortunately, but through this motion, we can match them when it comes to championing our local artists.”
In response, Arts Officer Etain McCooey said that Limerick Arts Office recognises the value in establishing an online directory of Limerick-based professional artists.
