Chart topper Phil Coulter celebrates his 60 year legacy

Playing University Concert Hall this Saturday October 25 with George Hutton and Geraldine Branagan.

AT the age of just 82 Phil Coulter is about to kick off yet another nationwide tour on October 25 at University Concert Hall.

How many people manage to top the charts in their eighties? At 82, Phil Coulter reached No. 2 in the UK Pop Charts this summer, thanks to Jade from Little Mix.

Her single ‘Angel of My Dreams,’ released in July, features a sample of Coulter’s 1967 classic ‘Puppet on a String,’ which he wrote for Sandie Shaw.

Critics praised the track, with Rolling Stone UK calling it a “bold, unrepentant start” to Jade’s solo career and Billboard naming it one of the best singles of 2024. Coulter, thrilled by the song’s success, reflected on its longevity, saying, “57 years just about makes it!”

Coulter’s legendary career spans 60 years, with collaborations from Luke Kelly to Elvis Presley. In his new show LEGACY, he reflects on his incredible journey in music, filled with timeless hits and stories, alongside special guests George Hutton and Geraldine Branagan. Coulter’s enduring influence and relevance make him one of Ireland’s most iconic music figures.

He’s written for a diverse range of artists, including Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard, and Luke Kelly. His Eurovision successes include ‘Puppet on a String’ (winner) and ‘Congratulations’(runner-up). Coulter’s beloved song ‘The Town I Loved So Well’ remains one of the most-played tracks on Irish radio.

In October 2022, at 80 years old, Coulter was honoured with the Freedom of the City of Derry, where a record-breaking choir of 2,000 people sang his famous song.

Despite his age, Coulter continues to innovate, releasing the single “Dear God” in 2021, which topped the Easy Listening charts in Ireland and the UK.

Coulter’s connection with Ukraine saw him perform his song “Steal Away” with a Ukrainian choir in Ireland.

His work spans generations, from producing Van Morrison to collaborating and song-writing with the two writers from Picture This who have just sold out two Summer shows in Limerick this week.
