Brothers of Limerick sport star accused of attacking man with hurley sticks

TWO brothers were this Monday (October 21) remanded on continuing bail for trial, accused of assaulting a man and being armed with hurleys during the course of the alleged attack.

Cian Hayes (33) and Daragh Hayes (37), both with an address at Ballyashea, Kildimo, County Limerick, appeared before Limerick Circuit Criminal Court for trial, which was adjourned to begin this Wednesday (October 23).

The pair are the brothers of five-time All-Ireland winning Limerick star hurler Kyle Hayes.

The accused siblings, Cian and Daragh, are each charged with assaulting a man, identified on charge sheets as Ciaran Ryan, causing Mr Ryan serious harm, at Ballyashea, Kildimo, on September 29, 2021, contrary to Section 4 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997.

Cian and Daragh Hayes are also each charged with producing a hurley during the course of the alleged assault on Mr Ryan, contrary to Section 11 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act, 1990.

Prosecuting barrister, Lily Buckley, BL, said the case was a “priority” matter among a list of trials before the current sessions of the Limerick Circuit Criminal Court.

The two accused men were present in court this Monday, but did not address the court.

Judge Colin Daly remanded both accused on continuing bail to appear before Limerick Circuit Criminal Court for trial on October 23.
