NEWCASTLE West (NCW) are back-to-back Limerick Senior Camogie champions following a snug 1-17 to 1-7 victory over Ahane in Cappamore.

It’s a remarkable season turnaround for NCW who only survived in Division One of the League after a relegation final defeat of Bruff.

Last weekend, Mike Quaid’s well-tutored team were already on course for title number four by half-time, well ahead 1-12 to 0-3.

With an awesome contribution of 1-8, full-forward Rebecca Delee was outstanding for NCW, while other lovely scores arrived through fellow inside forwards Iris Kennelly (0-4) and Roisín Ambrose, 0-3.

Niamh Brennan (0-6) top-scored for Ahane.

The origins of NCW date back a tad over 100 years, but following a number of lapses its current existence is since 1988.

NCW made the long-awaited breakthrough in 2021, and also won out in ‘21, ’23, and now ‘24.

The team will be at home to the Waterford winners in the Munster Club Championship semi-final on November 2.

For NCW, these are truly exciting times with the qualification also to the Men’s Intermediate Hurling Final and the continuation in the Senior Football Championship as title holders.

In the curtain-raiser on Saturday, Brian Sexton’s impressive Croagh Kilfinny overcame neighbours Granagh Ballingarry 1-9 to 0-6 in the Intermediate Final.

The stand-out performer was the winners’ full-forward Donna Kenny, who grabbed a brilliant 1-7 for a team captained by her sister Reba.

CK had led by just a point, 1-2 to 0-4, at the interval.

The club will now compete at senior level next season.

The win was a personal boost to dedicated Sexton (Bruree) ahead of his involvement next season with the Limerick Minor Hurling side.

In the Senior Plate Final, Adare bettered Killeedy.

The winning captain was centre-back Sophie O’Callaghan, who was also a most deserving recipient of the Player of the Match.
