IRELAND – with Limerick’s Kieran Earls, aged 33, a hugely influential figure – emerged brilliant overall winners at the Pitch and Putt World Cup in Spain.
Earls, who is attached to Bruff, is a native of Ballynanty and now lives in Caherdavin.
In the knock-out stages, Ireland defeated Switzerland and Galacia, to set up a final meeting with Portugal.
Here the Irish team of Earls, Kerry’s Damien Fleming, Ian Dillon (Kildare) and Pádraic Sarsfield of Louth triumphed 4-1 at the El Vendrell course, in Tarragona, Catalonia.
Earls (and Fleming) won both his doubles and singles matches in the decider.
The Ireland manager was Michael Vaughan.
