THE FATHER Russell Road Active Travel Scheme was officially opened this past week, following multi-million euro investments over the past number of years.

The transport infrastructure, completed by Limerick City and County Council’s Active Travel team, and funded by the Department of Transport and the National Transport Authority (NTA), opened on Friday of last week (October 11).

The scheme was allocated €3.2million over the past three years and now stands around one kilometre in length.

A representative for the Council said the new active travel infrastructure provides significant pedestrian and cycle upgrades between Racefield Roundabout and the entrance to Gouldavoher residential area.

The official launch of the new walk and cycle path took place at St Paul’s National School in Dooradoyle – parents, staff, and students of which, the Council say, will directly benefit from the scheme’s completion.

The scheme includes footpath upgrades and segregated cycling infrastructure, upgrade works to bus stops and side junctions, new road surfacing, and significant landscaping enhancements.

The footpath and cycling facilities at Racefield Roundabout have also been upgraded, along with overall improvements to crossing facilities for pedestrians and cyclists at junctions.

According to Mayor of Limerick, John Moran the completion of the Limerick Metropolitan Area’s Active Travel network is continuing to be carried out at a high standard and a quick pace.

Mayor Moran welcomed the new milestone in the completion of the Limerick Metropolitan Area’s Active Travel Network, saying that “strong pedestrian and cycling infrastructure on the West side of the city that is accessible for all will provide an important element of making the Raheen Mungret area a true ‘15-minute neighbourhood’”.

“This project will provide a vital connecting piece to link what is a heavily populated residential area to the Raheen Industrial Estate and the city centre in time.”

The Mayor said he was “looking forward to the continued rollout of Limerick’s Active Travel network in the months and years ahead”.
