A DELIVERY of cigarettes to a pub in Limerick City left the owner’s with a €2,000 hole in their pocket after thieves noticed the business’ premises was left unprotected.

That’s according to Henry Street Crime Prevention Officer, Sergeant Ber Leetch, who warned that it is essential to ensure that all doors, especially those leading to delivery areas as well as the delivery trucks themselves, are locked whenever unattended.

Footage from one break-in in Limerick City detailed the perpetrator’s process of tampering with an external electrical box to open the security shutters and enter unfettered.

Once the barrier was raised, the thieves only needed to smash a pane of glass to enter the premises.

In light of this, Sergeant Leetch advised retailers to review the security of their shutters, adding that controls for these shutters should ideally be located inside the building and bolted securely to the ground to prevent external tampering.

“Retail premises should ask their security company for a review of their shutters and if the controls are outside, they can be moved inside and remotely operated at the close of business,” she said.

Sergeant Leetch added that taking such preventative measures can significantly reduce the risk of theft, especially for businesses in sectors selling high-value products.
