SOCIAL Democrats councillor Elisa O’Donovan believes recent stark domestic abuse figures for Limerick may reflect an increase in the numbers of women bravely coming forward to seek support.

It was reported in this newspaper that Limerick had the highest number of reported domestic abuse cases nationwide last year, with 123.3 reports per 10,000 population.

“It is a sad reality that too often it takes women speaking out about their own trauma and experience of domestic violence before State institutions or the Government take any action,” Cllr O’Donovan told the Limerick Post.

Cllr O’Donovan called for the government to increase the number of refuge spaces in Limerick to ensure the growing number of women and children experiencing domestic violence have somewhere to go.
