TWO Limerick mothers were scammed out of considerable sums of money after they received a text message purporting to be from their respective daughters.

In one case, an unsuspecting mother received a text from who she thought was her daughter, claiming that she was not able to pay her rent.

The mother sent €2,000 to who she thought was her daughter’s landlord, Henry Street crime prevention officer Sergeant Ber Leetch explained.

Later that evening the stricken mother realised that she had been scammed.

Sergeant Leetch warned parents to be wary of any texts they may get from family asking for money and advised them to check before sending any cash to anyone.
