Republic of Ireland soccer star injured in road collision on Limerick Kerry border

IRISH international soccer player Savannah McCarthy is recovering from injuries after she was rescued from a burning car following a two-car collision near Glin, County Limerick.

The Kerry soccer star is understood to have broken a leg in the impact of the collision which occurred shortly before 8pm on the N69 last Sunday (October 6).

Garda sources confirmed that the 27-year-old athlete was the sole occupant of one of the cars. She was brought to University Hospital Limerick for treatment for her injuries.

Two men, aged in their 40s and 50s, who are understood to be natives of mainland Europe, were also taken hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

One of the men was being treated at University Hospital Limerick while the other was taken by ambulance to University Hospital Kerry.

The talented defender is signed with Shamrock Rovers ladies football club. In a statement to media, the club said it is “awaiting news on Savannah’s condition. We know that she is receiving excellent medical support and we hope for the best in her recovery.”

A Garda source said weather conditions on the night of the collision were poor, with Met Éireann issuing an orange rain warning in the region the previous day.

A Garda spokeswoman said that “Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a two-vehicle road traffic collision which occurred on the N69 at Glin, County Limerick on Sunday, 6th October 2024, shortly before 8pm.”

“A woman (20s) was brought to University Hospital Limerick to be treated for injuries which are believed to be non life-threatening.

“One man (40s) was taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment of injuries believed to be non-life-threatening.

“A second man (50s) was taken to University Hospital Kerry to be treated for injuries which are believed to be non-life-threatening.”

Appealing for witnesses, Gardaí called on drivers who were in the area between 7.45pm and 8.15pm on October 6 and have camera footage (including dashcam) to get in contact with investigating officers.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Newcastle West Garda Station on 069 20 650 the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station,” the Garda spokeswoman said.
