170 pubs across Limerick closed their doors since 2005.

LIMERICK has suffered one of the highest numbers of pub closures in Ireland, a recent report has shown.

Limerick had a 35.6 per cent decline in pubs since 2005, with 170 pubs across the county closing in the almost 20-year period, according to the report by the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland.

Nationally, more than 2,000 pubs closed their doors between 2005 and 2024, an average of 144 shutting up shop each year.

As part of the report, publicans were asked what they would do with extra government support, with one in five saying that they would revamp their premises, while 18 per cent said they would hire more staff.

One in four publicans reported seeing a 20 to 30 per cent increase in costs in the last two years.
