LIMERICK Labour Party councillor Conor Sheehan has condemned the government for what he deems a failure to address the national housing crisis, as the Central Statistics Office (CSO) reported an alarming 13.4 per cent annual house price growth in the Mid West, the highest in the country.
Cllr Sheehan has accused Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael of utterly failing to deliver affordable homes, secure tenancies, or tackle the chronic undersupply of housing in Limerick.
“The latest figures from the CSO confirm what families across Limerick have known for far too long: this government is not taking the housing crisis seriously,” Cllr Sheehan said.
“Young people in our community can’t afford homes, families are trapped in insecure rentals, and house prices in Limerick continue to rise at an unsustainable rate. We are facing a deepening crisis, and the Government’s piecemeal efforts are simply not enough.”
The hopeful candidate in the upcoming general election said that “whether it’s the CSO, the Central Bank report, or the latest Daft Report, every indicator is flashing red” for Limerick’s housing market.
“We risk creating a future where homeownership is entirely out of reach for an entire generation. The people of Limerick need affordable housing now. We can’t wait any longer for radical solutions.”
Labour, Sheehan says, has a clear plan to build better, stating that “the people of Limerick deserve more than the government’s broken promises and empty rhetoric”.
“Now more than ever, we need to take urgent action. The people of Limerick cannot continue to wait while this Government flounders. Labour has a clear plan to deliver the homes our community needs and to ensure that every child, family, and individual in Limerick has the chance to live in a secure and affordable home.”
