YOUNG people from Limerick have called on the Government to increase the budget for youth work services in Budget 2025.
The National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) held a special event this past week to bring young people face to face with Oireachtas members to discuss funding for youth services.
Yolanda Ndlovu and Kimberly Justen were Limerick’s representatives at the event, which called on the Government to increase the spending on youth services by €15million in October’s budget.
Representing the Limerick City constituency, Ms Ndlovu said that the meeting was a good way to show Oireachtas members the good work that is being done in the youth work sector.
“I really enjoyed meeting our local representatives and sharing with them some of the amazing experiences I’ve had with NYCI and Foróige,” she said.
“There’s so much important work happening in our local area to support young people and I want to make sure that our local representatives carry that message to the national level, so that youth work in our area and beyond gets its fair share come budget time,” the Limerick rep added.
Kathryn Walsh, NYCI Director of Policy and Advocacy said that the event was a way of telling policymakers how youth work can change people’s lives.
“This event was a great opportunity for policymakers to hear about how youth work can transform young people’s lives. We hope that this has made its value clear and that our elected representatives will commit to increasing funding in this year’s budget,” Ms Walsh concluded.
