All calm in the stormy waters of The Libertines

The Libertines

INDIE legends The Libertines will play Live at the Big Top, Limerick Milk Market tonight Wednesday September 25. Tickets from www.dolans.ie
The Libertines, the brainchild of Pete Doherty and Carl Barât, burst onto the scene in 1997 and swiftly became the poster boys of the early 2000s garage rock revival. With a raw sound that captured the essence of youthful rebellion and a relationship as turbulent as their music, they delivered two seminal albums, ‘Up the Bracket’ (2002) and ‘The Libertines’ (2004). Anthems like ‘Can’t Stand Me Now’ and ‘Time for Heroes’ became the soundtrack of a generation.
Despite internal strife and Doherty’s highly publicised battles with addiction that led to their 2004 split, their influence on the indie scene only grew. The band’s 2010 reunion for live shows and the 2015 release of their third album, ‘Anthems for Doomed Youth,’ proved their enduring appeal. The Libertines are celebrated for their chaotic yet heartfelt anthems, embodying a spirit of rebellion and camaraderie that still resonates deeply.
For the new album ‘All Quiet on The Eastern Esplanade’ released in March 2024, Doherty and Barât reunited for writing sessions in Port Antonio, Jamaica, before recording the album in just four weeks at The Albion Rooms in Margate with John Hassall (bass) and Gary Powell (drums).
Rolling Stone reviewed the new album saying, “The Libertines have taken the DNA of their noughties heyday and injected it with an all-important modern gaze and a dose of personal perspective. Crucially, it’s really fun. Diehard fans will have few complaints.”
The Libertines’ once-seen-never-forgotten live shows are here to save humanity from holograms, virtual reality, and AI auto-tuned bullshit, so switch off your pocket-held marketing machine and come and experience raw analogue euphoria at the hands of these delirious musical chaos-mongers.
The band are on tour to support the new album, the reviews are very positive and the current setlist is pretty evenly split between the new record, ‘Up The Bracket’ and ‘The Libertines’, so you will get to hear all the classics and new potential classics like ‘Merry Old England’ and ‘Run, Run, Run’.
