TWO LIMERICK schools will be among the first in Ireland to offer a new leaving certificate subject in the 2025/2026 term.

Limerick City East Secondary School in Castletroy and John the Baptist Community School in Hospital will be the only two schools in the county to offer the new Climate Action and Sustainable Development subject from September 2025.

Drama, Film, and Theatre Studies were also added to the leaving cert curriculum from 2025.

Minister for Education Norma Foley said that there was a lot of interest from schools in Limerick to offer the new subject.

“It was fantastic to see a strong level of interest from schools of all types in Limerick and across the country in taking part in this first phase of delivering the new Leaving Certificate subjects of Drama, Film, and Theatre Studies and Climate Action and Sustainable Development,” she said.
