Fresh ideas sought to breathe new life into Limerick City’s Market Quarter

The public consultation is open until September 24.

MAYOR John Moran has invited the people of Limerick to have their say on transforming the city’s Market Quarter.

Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) launched a non-statutory public consultation regarding the proposed Market Quarter and Cruises Street Public Realm Upgrade project.

The Council’s vision for the project is to improve and enhance the existing streets and public spaces in the Market Quarter in order to revitalise the area (encompassing the Milk Market and Cruises Street) and make it a key location for locals and tourists alike.

Mayor Moran said that “this is another of a very important set of public consultations which we are rolling out to inform the work of the five-year mayoral programme”.

“This consultation follows on the one which is ongoing on King’s Island and will be closely followed by the associated framework discussions for Arthur’s Quay area. Together, they will help us formulate a fully up-to-date and integrated view of how these key areas in our city centre need to evolve.”

Addressing the people of Limerick Mayor Moran said that “by contributing your ideas and feedback, you are playing a vital role in creating public spaces that enhance the attractiveness of our city centre and helping ensure that they work for all”.

“We know that improved streets and public areas boost the city’s appeal for residents and visitors. But sometimes knowing all of the concerns is hard.  That is why your feedback is essential.”

The proposed project is being delivered by LCCC’s Place Making Department and is funded by the Urban Regeneration Development Fund (URDF) as well as the National Transport Authority (NTA).

According to Vincent Murray, director of service with the Place Making Team at Limerick City and County Council, who is tasked with delivering the protect, the aim is to enhance the vibrancy and accessibility of the Market Quarter and Cruises Street areas.

A non-statutory public consultation period started on September 12 and runs for a four-week period until October 9.

A public event is being held on September 24 in the UL City Campus on Sarsfield Street 1pm to 7.30pm.

Submissions on the consultation can be made in writing to Place Making Department, Limerick City and County Council Offices, Merchants Quay, Limerick, V94 EH90; via MyPoint before October 9; or in person at the consultation event on September 24.
