Soc Dems councillor welcomes planned upgrade for Grove Island Leisure Centre

Soc Dems councillor Shane Hickey-O'Mara has welcomed the investment.

SOCIAL Democrats councillor Shane Hickey-O’Mara has welcomed news that a €1.5million upgrade is planned for Grove Island Leisure Centre, with works set to begin in the autumn season.

In a meeting with Limerick Council, councillors for Limerick City North were briefed on the planned upgrade to the Corbally community and leisure facility.

While planned works are being undertaken to upgrade the centre, which will include the existing hall and gym, the changing facilities, and the health suite, the upgrades will be carried out with minimal disruption on a phased basis.

Works are expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

The facility, which opened in 2003, is owned by Limerick City and County Council and has been operated by AURA Leisure since 2014.

Welcoming the update, Cllr Hickey O’Mara said that “it’s fantastic news for the people of Limerick that Grove Island is being upgraded.”

“Despite being a lifelong Limerick resident, I was unaware that we had a public swimming pool. Having spoken to many people about public swimming pools during the election campaign, it’s clear that I am not the only one who was unaware of this.”

The newly-elected Soc Dems councillor told the Limerick Post that “given Grove Island Leisure Centre’s success since opening its doors, it sets a precedent for the establishment of more public swimming pools in our city, thereby furthering the opportunities for residents to learn an essential life skill, build their fitness, and to have fun while doing it”.
