Limerick crime prevention officer offers advice for older people collecting fuel allowance

Crime Prevention Officer Sergeant Ber Leetch.

CRIME Prevention Officer Sergeant Ber Leetch has warned that older people could be targets for theft in the coming weeks as they pick up their fuel allowances.

Sergeant Leetch warned that criminals are aware that people may be collecting extra cash in the coming weeks, urging people to “be aware of your surroundings”.

“If you consider yourself vulnerable, go with a trusted friend or family member. Do not leave the counter until your money is safely stored away.

“Ladies, ideally do not carry a handbag, wear a jacket with zipped pockets and put your cash in there,” the Garda Sergeant said.

“Gentlemen, do not put your wallets into your back pocket, keep it zipped into an inside jacket pocket,” the Henry Street Sergeant advised.
