Limerick grandmother-granddaughter farming duo sowing seeds of TV fame

Croom farmers Hannah Quinn-Mulligan and her grandmother Catherine Quinn.

LIMERICK farmers Hannah Quinn-Mulligan and her grandmother Catherine Quinn are set to take centre stage in a new TG4 series, Caomhnóirí na Talún (Guardians of the Land), which kicked off this week.

Produced by IWR Media, the series follows five farmers across Ireland who are leading the way in sustainable farming practices and biodiversity conservation.

The show offers a year-long glimpse into the lives of sustainable farmers as they work to balance agricultural production with nature conservation.

Hailing from Croom, County Limerick, journalist Hannah Quinn-Mulligan and her grandmother Catherine Quinn farm beneath Tory Hill, where they breed pedigree Hereford cattle and operate a small micro-dairy featuring just four Friesian cows.

In addition to milk, the dynamic grandaughter-grandmother duo sell eggs, yogurt, and ice cream directly from their farm shop.

Over the years, the pair have made significant efforts to create and maintain habitats on their farm, from preserving eight acres of wetlands to planting 1,000 oak trees.

Hannah’s efforts in sustainable farming are further supported by her participation in the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) farm plan scheme, which encourages farmers to adopt environmentally-friendly practices.

The scheme, highlighted in the series, showcases how innovative approaches can lead to tangible environmental benefits for Irish farms.

Aside from her farming work, Hannah is a journalist and radio reporter. She also founded the Women in Agriculture Stakeholder Group, which successfully campaigned for the first systemic support for women in agriculture.

Caomhnóirí na Talún is a six-part series that provides an intimate look at the challenges and rewards of farming in harmony with nature.

The show features farmers from diverse regions, including the Burren, Inis Mór, and east Cork, who are pioneering practices that protect wildlife and promote biodiversity on their farms.

Hannah expressed her excitement about being part of the series, saying that “it’s a privilege to showcase how farming and nature can go hand-in-hand. Our farm is small, but we’re trying to make a big difference. I hope viewers will see that with a little creativity and dedication, we can all contribute to protecting our environment.”

Caomhnóirí na Talún kicked off this past Wednesday (September 4) on TG4 and runs weekly.
