A MAN is recovering from emergency surgery at University Hospital Limerick (UHL) after he was badly injured in a knife attack in Limerick City this past weekend.
The injured man was stabbed in the stomach and chest “a number of times” during an assault by another man on Newenham Street at around 1.20am on Sunday last (September 1).
A Garda source said that the victim required emergency surgery after the attack but is now in a stable condition.
It appears the knife attack was unprovoked, however Gardaí said investigations were ongoing.
The injured man was with at least one other person at the time of the assault.
Sergeant Ber Leetch, crime prevention officer at Henry Street Garda Station, said that the injured man is in his late 20s and that he was “stabbed a number of times”, after which a “large crowd” of onlookers gathered at the scene.
Sergeant Leetch appealed to any witnesses to the assault to contact Henry Street Gardaí.
A Garda spokeswoman added that “Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information in relation to this incident or with video footage to contact them”.
Anyone with any information which may help in the ongoing investigation into the vicious knife attack, or who has any CCTV or video footage from the time around the attack, is asked to contact Henry Street Garda Station on 061 212 400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
The Garda spokeswoman added that investigations into the late-night knife attack are still ongoing.
