Limerick Aontú campaigner backs single-sex schools

Aontú Limerick local elections candidate Eric Nelligan

AN AONTÚ campaigner for Castletroy, Eric Nelligan, has expressed “deep concern” over Further Education Minister Patrick O’Donovan’s comments on single sex schools.

Minister O’Donovan recently stated that society would be better with a co-ed learning model.

Disagreeing, Mr Nelligan, an assistant principal in an all-male school, claimed that “the attack from a minister in the Department of Education …  is the latest in a series of efforts to attack single sex schools and remove them from Irish education”.

Mr Nelligan further claimed that there is an ongoing concerted effort to “link violence and aggression in society to members of single sex schooling communities”.

The Aontú campaigner maintains there is no educational logic to Minister O’Donovan’s call for a co-ed learning model.
