Community praying for two men seriously injured in County Limerick farm accident

The two men were airlifted to Cork University Hospital.

PRAYERS have been offered in County Limerick for two men who were being treated for serious injuries at Cork University Hospital after they fell through a roof of a shed while carrying out work on a farm on Saturday (August 31).

The two men, aged in their 60s and 50s, sustained head and other injuries during the workplace accident, which took place around lunchtime on a farm at Ardagh on Saturday.

The two men, who are very well respected in the West Limerick area with heavy involvement with St Kieran’s GAA Club, were airlifted from the farm by two air ambulances to Cork University Hospital.

A Garda spokeswoman said that “Gardaí and emergency services attended a workplace incident on a premises in Ardagh, County Limerick” and that “the Health and Safety Authority has been notified”.

The Garda spokeswoman said the mens’ injuries were “believed to be serious at this time”.

Two units from Newcastle West Fire and Rescue Service were also dispatched to the scene to assist ambulance personnel.

Former Mayor of Limerick, Fianna Fáil councillor Michael Collins, who knows both men, said the farm accident was “a big, big shock to the local community and everyone hopes they will be well and that they will be okay in the days ahead. All we can do is wish them well.”

Cllr Collins said the men are “two very well know community people, they are both very, very involved in the GAA, and the community, they are very well known and very respected”.

A spokesperson for the St Kieran’s club said its “volunteer network are rallying around” both men and their families.

A spokesman for the Health and Safety Authority said that it was “aware of the incident and has launched an investigation”.

Prayers were being said locally that both men make a full recovery from their injuries.
