LIMERICK’S Róisín Ní Ríain, Drombanna, delivered for Team Ireland its first medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games with a superb second place finish in the 100m backstroke final at La Defense Arena in Paris.

The race was won by world record holder Gia Pergolini (USA), with Italy’s Carlotta Gilli in third position.

What was most notable was the presence of a large Irish contingent at the venue.

“It was really nice to be able to get out there and win a medal and to have all of my friends and family be able to watch makes it even more exciting, hearing them when i came out as well makes all the difference,” she told RTÉ Sport after her excellent silver medal achievement.

Ní Ríain will compete in the 200m individual medley on Tuesday and then the 100m breaststroke a couple of days later.
