AS SCHOOLS reopen their doors for the new term, one Limerick school has made the move to a new state-of-the-art school building.

Mungret Community College’s new €36million school campus opened to students and teachers this week, under the patronage of Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board.

The brand new school sits on a 10 acre site and will cater for up to 1,000 students, making it one of the biggest schools in the region.

The new building, spread out over three levels, features 58 teaching spaces including 33 general classrooms, two specialist autism classes, two design and communication graphics rooms, six science labs, two art/craft rooms, two home economics rooms, a technology room, two multimedia labs, a music room, a textile room, two construction studies rooms, an engineering room, a library, a PE hall and fitness suite, multiple ancillary spaces, and extensive external areas including a pitch and six hard play courts.

George O’Callaghan of Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board said the school’s opening marked a new era for Mungret Community College.

“As Mungret Community College embarks on a new chapter, this is a very exciting time for the entire school community. Principal Liam O’Mahoney and the staff have been providing the highest academic standards since its establishment in 2017,” he said.

“I know they will continue to promote the school’s values of creativity, innovation and academic excellence at this new campus. The high quality of facilities in the new school are the result of significant government investment and is part of a multi-million euro programme of capital development in ETB community colleges throughout our region.”

Speaking on the first day of classes, principal of Mungret Community College Liam O’Mahoney said that the new school building came after eight years of planning.

He said that the new facility’s opening marked “a very special day for the whole school community as we welcome both our 6th year and our incoming 1st year students to this amazing new campus. This is the culmination of eight years of planning and development that has delivered these excellent facilities provided by Limerick and Clare ETB”.

“Our state-of-the-art new school campus will benefit both students and staff as we continue to provide high quality innovative teaching and learning in an inclusive and supportive environment, helping our students to achieve academic excellence.”

Every classroom in the new school is equipped with the latest technology to support interactive teaching, with extensive sports facilities and solar panels to ensure the new building is sustainable.
