Limerick Council puts ‘large’ roundabout concerns to rest

Videos circulated on social media show a bus struggling to navigate the new roundabout in recent days.

ASSURANCES have been given by Limerick City and County Council that concerns over the “large” scale of the new roundabout outside the Rosmor housing estate are unfounded.

Local councillor for the area, Catherine Slattery, welcomed recent works on the Old Cork Road to see a bus service reinstated before addressing fresh worries raised by residents.

As part of the installation of a bus shelter outside Rosmor, a roundabout had to be built so that buses could turn. However, concerns have been raised locally about the size of the roundabout.

Video footage posted online in the days since the roundabout’s opening have shown busses struggling to navigate the new infrastructure.

Cllr Slattery said she passed on residents’ concerns about the roundabout being “quite large” to the Council’s Active Travel department, who explained that it was designed by engineers specifically for a bus to turn.

“The roundabout is large and when the bus is turning it does mount the roundabout, but that is the way it is designed so the bus can mount the edge of the roundabout,” the City East representative explained.

“I have driven the area and used the roundabout and you do have to slow down when turning, but I see that as a positive for the area,” she added.

The Council told Cllr Slattery that “the roundabout has been designed and constructed within the lands available and its design allows for buses and larger vehicles to cross over the roundabout.”

“Having said that, a Stage 3 Road Safety Audit, an independent audit of the works following construction, is due to take place in the coming weeks and this audit will examine all aspects of the roundabout.”
