LIMERICK is set to host the World Wallball Championships this coming weekend.
The University of Limerick (UL) will host the World Wallball Championships, which is to be sponsored by O’Neill’s, and take place across the next week.
UL’s Sports Arena will host the championships which start on Sunday (August 18), and run for six days, with grades from Juvenile up to the Elite Senior Open games.
Wallball is the game given to several sports that involve players hitting a ball off of a wall with their hands or feet.
Limerick Minister of State Niall Collins said that the event will bring a much-needed economic boost to Limerick, and with the Olympics now over, the interest in sport in Ireland is high.
“I’m delighted that the World Wallball Championships are being hosted in Limerick,” Minister Collins said.
“From Sunday, thousands of visitors from across the country and the rest of the world are set to travel to the University of Limerick for the games, which were formally called the World Handball Championships. Hundreds of competitors will be taking part. This will provide a huge boost to the city economically,” he said.
The Limerick Minister added that “now that the Olympics are finished, we can turn our attention to Limerick and to the Irish who are competing in these games. I look forward to it getting underway”.
The President of GAA Handball, Conor McDonnell, said that this year’s championships in Limerick will be “the most spectacular handball event ever held anywhere in the world”.
“We are very excited that in our centenary year, the World Wallball Championships will take place at the University of Limerick. It’s a fabulous arena that we intend to build.”
