Limerick Film Track weekender: John Murry on screen and on stage, Underground Shorts at the Crypt & Young Filmmakers Showcase

Woken screens at Belltable on Saturday August 24 followed by an in-person conversation with Director Alan Friel and Producer John McDonnell.

Film Track, a 3-day showcase of film screenings and talks takes place in Limerick on 23-25 August.

Highlights of the weekend include, screening of the locally-shot sci-fi thriller Woken, starring the electrifying duo Erin Kellyman and Maxine Peake, followed by a deep dive into cinematic craft with Tadhg O’Sullivan in an In Conversation event. The One-Shot Filmmaking competition is where 10 teams will be racing against the clock to create their own one-take wonders on the city streets.

All of this unfolds alongside Feile Na Greine, the city’s cutting-edge festival of emerging and experimental sounds, turning Limerick into a vibrant epicenter where film and music collide.

Film Track is run by Film in Limerick through Innovate Limerick, with WIRED FM, and in partnership with Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board, the National talent Academies, and Belltable Limerick.

This is summer filmmaking with a twist according to Paul C. Ryan, Regional Film Manager at Film in Limerick said: “It’s a summer film experience with a difference, welcoming all aspiring and experienced filmmakers and musicians to the city for 3-days of film and music fun. We have a great programme lined up and all the public events are free to attend. We are delighted to welcome so many industry guests to the city and to work with our partners to put the focus on developing the film sector in the region.”

Film / music crossover events are also planned including a screening of the documentary feature, Graceless Age, The Ballad of John Murry, followed by a talk with director Sarah Share and musician John Murry who will also play live that night at the Record Room.

Film Track also celebrates the work of film-maker, sound artist and writer Tadhg O’Sullivan with an in-conversation event and the weekend offers a series of panel events with industry guests sharing their insights with emerging filmmakers and musicians.

Friday 23, 1.30pm, Belltable – Young Filmmakers Showcase. Special programme of new work curated by Ireland’s leading young filmmaker’s organisation – Fresh Film and acclaimed local film group – Emerging Limerick Filmmakers (ELF).

Friday 23, 3pm, Belltable – The Graceless Age – The Ballad of John Murry. John Murry was on the cusp of greatness with his highly acclaimed album The Graceless Age (2013) when, addicted to heroin and creatively exhausted, he washed up on Irish shores a broken man. Now, he is ready to retrace his steps back into the dark heart of American life to face his difficult childhood, traumatic assault and resulting years of opioid addiction. Director Sarah Share (If I Should Fall From Grace) follows John’s journey from near death to redemption and a new zest for life and art through his outstanding music. The screening will be followed by an in-person conversation with John Murry and director Sarah Share at 4.45pm

Followed by John Murry in Concert at The Record Room at 8pm.

Saturday 24, 3pm, ENGINE, Cecil St. – In Conversation with Director Tadhg O’Sullivan. Tadhg is an artist and film-maker working primarily in non-fiction cinema. Often working with literary sources and cinematic archive, his films seek to evoke the timelessness of human experience, and to illuminate the present moment through ideas from the distant past. His feature film To the Moon had its world premiere recently at Venice Days and was selected for Telluride Film Festival

Saturday 24, 10pm, meet at Engine, Cecil Street at 10pm to travel to the secret venue – Underground Shorts at the Crypt. Experience a short film screening with a difference. Join the audience underground in a church crypt for a programme of genre-bending short films brought to you by Film in Limerick. Over 18’s.
