Popular farmer to be laid to rest following tragic accident

The late Bobby Richardson.

TRIBUTES have poured in the length and breadth of Limerick for a popular Lisnagry farmer who lost his life in a tragic farm accident earlier this week.

Bobby Richardson, of Killeenagarriff, Lisnagry, County Limerick, was killed after an attack by a bull on Tuesday August 13.

He is to be laid to rest this Saturday following Requiem Mass at St Patrick’s Church in Ahane.

Deeply popular in his community, Mr Richardson’s tragic death has left the north Limerick region in a state of shock, with mourners united in grief for the farmer described as a “real gentleman and always a very helpful neighbour”.

The entire community has rallied around the Richardson family in the days since the farmer’s untimely passing, with one mourner posting online that “words cannot express the sadness we feel for you all. May you get strength from each other to get through the dark days ahead. The bed of heaven to his gentle soul.”

Others said that “we know your family is a strong unit and I know you will find comfort and support with each other and continue with fond memories of your dad”, noting too that the “sincere outpouring of grief and sadness captures the anguish you share”.

Bobby was remembered without exception by mourners as a “kind, gentle soul” and a “considerate gentleman” who lived to give a helping hand to his neighbours and those around him.

“Bobby was a great man and a great neighbour, always available to help, only a few weeks ago he was, as always, a very great help with my father’s grave. We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragedy,” one mourner wrote in an online post.

“Was so upset to read of this tragic death … a man going about his work … Hope he is now at peace in the arms of Our Lord,” another mourner wrote.

Gardaí and the Health and Safety Authority have both confirmed they are investigating Mr Richardson’s tragic death following the bull attack.

The HSA recorded 16 farm-related deaths in Ireland in 2023, an increase of four on 2022 figures, with half of those killed on farms last year aged 65 or older.

Mr Richardson is survived by his wife Joan, children Henry, Martin, and Bríd, their partners Martina, Sinéad, and Harry, grandchildren Harry and Winnie, siblings George, Noel, Mary, Rebecca, and Teresa, brothers and sisters-in-law, and a wide network of family, friends, neighbours, and admirers.

He will be reposing at the home of his son Martin (V94 KF2C) this Friday (August 16) from 4pm.

Requiem Mass for the late farmer will take place on Saturday at St Patrick’s Church in Ahane from 11.30am, followed by burial at Killeenagarriff Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the Richardson family have suggested donations, if desired, to the Parkinsons Association of Ireland.
