LOCAL athletes fared well recently at both the European and British Transplant Games.
Limerick’s Rob Merrigan, who now lives in Watergrasshill (Cork) won silver in both the individual and team, alongside Mike Kiely, golf events in Portugal.
Trevor Lynch competed in both the European and British games.
The talented athlete took in Gold in the 800m and a Bronze medal in the 1500m race.
If this wasn’t enough, Lynch – Chairman of Transport Sport Ireland – then competed in Nottingham at the British Games – an annual event of over 1,200 transplanted athletes celebrating the gift of life through sport.
Liam Patterson, a teacher from West Cork now living in Limerick, participated in his first transplant games in Nottingham.
He won a bronze in the 800 metres and was proudly cheered on by wife Annette and his two children, Oisín and Saoirse.
Patterson also competed in Team Football at the Games.
Transplant Sport Ireland won 23 medals in total, nine Gold, seven Silver and seven Bronze at the British Games.
At the European Games, the haul was an astonishing 65 medals by 25 athletes.
