THIS Saturday (August 10) people from all corners of the world meet up in the Treaty City to celebrate the diversity of culture that Limerick has to offer.
Limerick Anti-Racism Network has organised the ‘Limerick Says Welcome’ event as celebration of diversity, which will take place this weekend at Harvey’s Quay in the city centre.
The event will be family friendly, with musicians and artists performing throughout the two hours of the event, as well as a chance to meet people from different countries and cultures.
Organisers say the aim of the event is to highlight what is great about Limerick, and to show how everyone is welcome in the city regardless of their background or nationality.
They also say it will be an opportunity for people to share stories and to meet people from different parts of the world that they might not ordinarily meet.
CEO of migrant rights organisation Doras, John Lannon, said that since the organisation was founded, he has seen the benefits that immigrants have brought to Limerick.
“Since our organisation was founded 24 years ago, we have seen the positive changes that newcomers have brought to Limerick, as well as the challenges they face. Many migrants choose to come to the city or county voluntarily, while others who have escaped from war and persecution have also found sanctuary here.
“Over the years they have all become part of the rich fabric of Limerick’s economic and social landscape,” Mr Lannon said.
The open family fun day takes place this Saturday from 12 noon to 2pm, and is free and open to people from all backgrounds and walks of life to attend.
The organisers say that Limerick Says Welcome is a reminder that “everyone has the right to be treated equally, and with dignity and respect, regardless of their race, ethnicity, nationality, or class.”
“Limerick has a proud record in this regard and they look forward to it remaining that way.”
