A SIGNIFICANT social housing development in Limerick City has been given the green light to proceed following an appeal to An Bord Pleanála.

Tinwat Holdings, in partnership with Clúid Housing Association, was granted planning permission by Limerick City and County Council to build 46 apartments on New Road, Thomondgate, a development that was appealed to An Bord Pleanála by St Munchin’s Umbrella Group.

Now, the appeals body has given the development the go ahead, subject to new conditions.

The development will consist of 23 one-bedroom apartments and 14 two-bedroom apartments in a four storey apartment block, with a further three storey block housing nine two-bedroom apartments, a community room, and a biodiversity area.

As part of the new conditions, developers are to remove 13 of the proposed car parking spaces, prepare an assessment on how to deal with invasive species on the land, and ensure none of the residential units on the site be occupied until the biodiversity area has been completed and signed off on by the Council.

Other conditions include materials proposed for use in the development being submitted to the council for approval, that works only take place on the site within specified hours, and that public lighting be provided as part of the scheme.

Previous objections to the development raised concerns about the scale of the new apartments and the impact on the residential amenity of the area, the size of the proposed biodiversity area, and concerns about the management of Japanese Knotweed on the site.
