CLOSE to a million euros has been awarded to community projects, groups, parks, and schools across Limerick as part of a €16.5million funding boost nationwide under the Community Recognition Fund.
It is understood the multi-million funding round is the first of a number of tranches in the coming months being handed down to communities who have shown a warm welcome to migrants and refugees seeking a new home in their area.
14 local groups across the Treaty were among 185 nationwide awarded this past week by Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphries, as part of the Community Recognition Fund.
The funding round saw €100,000 awarded to Limerick-based migrant and refugee support organisation Doras, while €95,000 went to the Cpt Tim Madigan Memorial Park in Shanagolden.
12 other Limerick community organisations, projects, and schools were awarded €50,000 each, including: Abbeyfeale Town Park; St Ita’s Hall, Abbeyfeale; Ardagh District Recreational and Sporting LTD; Scoil Dean Cussen, Bruff; Bruff Grange Meanus Community Council; Cappamore Playground; Outdoor Recreational Area, Castleconnell; Hospital Family Resource Centre; Teach na Cille, Kilfinnane; Kilmallock Playground; West Wall and Priory Walks, Kilmallock; and Limerick Celtics Basketball Club.
The fund was first introduced in 2023 to recognise the efforts of Irish communities who have gone above and beyond in welcoming migrants and refugees fleeing war and persecution at home into their towns.
Limerick TD and Minister for Higher Education, Patrick O’Donovan, said “this investment is just the first of a number of tranches that will be announced under the Community Fund over the coming months”.
