GROUND has been broken at Lidl’s newest store in Limerick, with Mayor John Moran on hand this past week to turn the first sod.
Lidl is currently building its latest store in Towlerton, Ballysimon, which will mark Limerick’s sixth outlet by the German retailer.
30 jobs will be created by the new store, with up to 100 construction jobs being supported throughout the store’s construction.
Planning permission was granted by Limerick City and County Council for a mixed-use development at the new suburb in Towlerton, which will see the new Lidl store built, as well as commercial, residential and office space.
Limerick Educate Together School was opened in the new suburb last year, and the new Bon Secours hospital is currently also under construction.
Mayor of Limerick John Moran said at the turning of the sod that the new store will be a welcome addition to the suburb.
“Lidl Ireland’s commitment to the Limerick and Mid West region is warmly welcomed and I am honoured to turn the first sod at what is the latest large scale development being delivered on the new access road off the City East Roundabout,” Mayor Moran said.
“The planned completion of the Bloodmill Road Extension works in early 2025 will further transform this side of the city, connecting the City East Roundabout all the way down to Childers Road.”
Mayor Moran added that “it is important that all neighbourhoods have a wide range of services and amenities and I welcome the arrival of yet another important service to this side of Limerick”.
Tara O’Connor, regional managing director at Lidl, said that “Limerick is hugely important to Lidl, as we have traded proudly here since 2000 with the Childers Road branch, one of the first stores to open in the country.”
“The development of our new store in Ballysimon represents a major investment for Lidl, contributing significantly to the local economy and providing long term employment for the area as we expand our store network in Limerick City to six stores,” Ms O’Connor said.
