MEMBERS of Limerick City and Council (LCCC) will meet next month to discuss a potential change to the basic rate of the local property tax in Limerick.

That’s according to a notice published by LCCC, which also called for input from the public.

According to the notice, the Finance (Local Property Tax) Act 2012 makes provisions for elected members of a local authority to pass a resolution to make changes to the basic rate of the local property tax in their area.

Councillors can move to vary the rate by a percentage known as the ‘local adjustment factor’, which can be between 15 per cent above or below the basic rate.

According to the notice, council members “will meet in September 2024 to consider the setting of a local adjustment factor”.

In September, members of LCCC will decide if such an amendment to the basic local property tax rate is to be made, or they may decide not to adjust the rate.

The local authority has called on the people of Limerick to make their thoughts known on any such tax change.

“Limerick City and County Council welcomes written submissions from the public on this matter specifically covering the potential effects of varying the basic rate of the local property tax on businesses, individuals, and on local authority services,” the public notice read.

Submissions can be made before August 28 at limerick.ie/council/local-property-tax, by email on [email protected], or by post to Property Tax Consultation, Limerick City and County Council, Finance Section, Barrow House, Michael Street, Limerick.
